Dr. Vandana Shiva, A-60, Hauz Khas, New Delhi – 110 016, India

Dear Dr. Shiva:

It is our very great pleasure to present you with the original artwork herewith enclosed, a gift of The Blossom Project.

The purpose of the Blossom Project is to inspire people to do their best to serve the needs of global community, as defined by the Millennium Development Goals of the United Nations. The enclosed watercolour painting is one of 19 we are sending out as gifts to individuals or groups able to bring about positive change in the world.

Each painting is a token of acknowledgement for work already done. Each is a gesture of encouragement for work that may yet be undertaken in the future.

Specifically, we wish to acknowledge your numerous original approaches on issues of food, agriculture and development over many years. The “nine seeds” movement which you founded called Navdanya for women-centered protection of biological and cultural diversity has raised awareness worldwide that the great majority of farmers are women. Navdanya demonstrates that women are our primary ecological champions, the stewards of biodiversity through seed-saving and preservation of indigenous ecological knowledge. Navdanya supports 54 community seed banks and has provided training to over 500,000 farmers in India. Your work has defended food sovereignty in the face of globalization of agri-food markets.

We encourage you to continue your work, to continue to find new means to challenge the global status-quo in food and agriculture. We encourage you to keep inspiring women farmers everywhere.

The enclosures provide background on The Blossom Project, the paintings, the recipients, the Millennium Development Goals, and ourselves.
